Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu, ANSPOLY came into existence through an upgrade of Anambra State College of Agriculture, Mgbakwu by the then Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano on January 1, 2017. The law for its establishment also came into effect the same year. It was upgraded to meet need to expand the space for training of manpower for the growing dynamics of the time.
The young polytechnic had the vision to become a leading polytechnic of great reputation, with an outstanding and enviable academic standard, equipping students to be technologically skilled, morally-sound and entrepreneurial-minded. It aims to achieve excellence through promoting the acquisition of technological and academic competencies in a serene academic environment by the use of structures and adequate interactions between qualified, experienced and motivated staff and suitably qualified and disciplined students to promote technology for development and skill acquisition for self-reliance and sustenance.
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the regulatory body for polytechnics and other technological institutions on October 28, 2019 granted interim national recognition to the institution as a full fledged Polytechnic.
The Polytechnic was further enlisted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for twelve two-year National diploma (ND) courses. The courses spread across four schools are as follows: Under the School of Agriculture and Related Disciplines, there are Agricultural Technology, Animal Health and Production Technology, Fisheries Technology and Home and Rural Economics. Under the School of Engineering Technology, there are: Computer Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology and Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology.
In the School of Management Sciences, they have Accountancy, Business Administration and Management and Co-operative Economics and Management while in the School of Science and Technology, there are Computer Science and Technology, Nutrition and Science Laboratory Technology.
The Polytechnic is also fully ready while awaiting full take off for her Higher National Diploma programmes in nine departments spread across three schools.
In addition, the Polytechnic offers preliminary, remedial studies and full-time or part-time short duration, practical-based programmes for school leavers, youths, retirees and unemployed people in the society to enable them set up income generating ventures. Some of the areas where they offer these courses include: Agricultural Field Attendance, Tractor Driving Operation, Computer Operation, Forestry, Rabbit and Grass cutter production, Pig Production, Processing and Packaging, Fisheries Production, and Environmental Conservation and Land Management..
Notably, by the NBTE accreditation, the Polytechnic was enlisted by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Abuja for the release of intervention funds as is obtained in other tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The implication is that from 2021, the Polytechnic joined other tertiary institutions in Nigeria to partake in the sharing of proceeds of Education Tax paid by companies which sums to over five hundred million naira per annum.
Presently, the school has in place facilities that meets 21st century skilled manpower needs. Some of these centres are Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) with facilities for training, Ultramodern cassava processing centre established in collaboration with Harvest Plus from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for training on improved and modern processing techniques and for commercial purpose, Vocational skills and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (VSEDC) for training in over twenty skills.
This development driven higher institution is led by Dr.(Mrs) Njideka Chiekezie who is the Acting Rector. Some members of her management team include the Acting Registrar in the person of Dr. Nkechi Udala, the Acting Bursar, Mr. Kingsley Dim, and the Acting Librarian, Mr Cliff Nwogwugwu.
