Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, its Information counterpart and a partner have sensitized Awka residents against child labour.
The sensitization, which took the team on a road walk from Arroma Junction to Eke Awka Roundabout, saw them share fliers on the dangers of child labour.
Speaking to the ABS, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, said that the road walk is to tell alert people on the dangers of enslaving any child under any circumstance.
Mrs. Obinabo explained that they want to protect the future of Anambra Children from abuse as Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is determined to stamping out child labour and all forms of child abuse in the state.
According to her, most abused children in the society become a threat and detrimental to the society in the future, and made it clear that they will continue to clamp down on people, who use children to beg along the roads, as well as other beggars in the society.
The state Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu, in his speech said that a child is supposed to be treasured, cared for and educated, pointing out that child labour stunts the physical and mental development of a child.
According to Sir Paul, child labour also affects children socially and morally and equally expose them to child abuse such as rape, battering, starvation among others.
A community leader, Mrs. Dorcas Nwabude, who was part of the exercise thanked Anambra State Government for living up to its responsivity noting that the exercise will help immensely in helping the society.
The sensitization team later visited a victim of child abuse, who was terribly battered by her father and currently receiving treatment at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.
