Wife of the Governor of Anambra State Dr Nonye Soludo says improved economic growth amidst crisis, conflicts and poverty has become crucial to tackling renewed cases of child labour and related crimes.
Dr Soludo stated this in a statement released in Awka to mark the 2023 World Day Against Child Labour.
According to the Governor’s wife, winning the war against child labour calls for collective efforts.
She explained that with poverty cited as the major cause of child labour, government should initiate socio-economic policies that will cushion high living costs and have direct positive impact on low-income families.
Dr Soludo, while also advocating improved social justice and a review of child support and protection policies, said that every child deserves equal and fair opportunity to live and succeed.
The governor’s wife also explained that stricter laws have become imperative to check cases of child labour and other related crimes, adding that education must be subsidized to accommodate every child.
While stating that the present administration in Anambra State has achieved significant results by making child-friendly policies in the areas of education, health, social justice and welfare, Dr Soludo urged parents and guardians to seek better economic alternatives, knowing the inherent dangers and legal consequences of child labour.
Commenting on the theme of this year’s World Day Against Child Labour: ‘Social Justice for All. End Child Labour,” the Anambra governor’s wife observed that child labour deprives children their opportunities in education.
World Day Against Child Labour was observed across the world recently .
