A gun battle betwq1een hordes of unknown gunmen and the operatives of the Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, NHFSS, has led to the neutralization of at least, six of the criminal elements with two members of the group arrested and handed over to the police.

 

Acting on native intelligence, officers and men of NHFSS, led by CSO Ojukwu of Umuoba Anam, working with some men of the state vigilante group had, between Friday night through Saturday, laid siege on a camp located at a forest in Umuenwelum-Anam which was identified as hide out of the unknown gunmen.

 

Reports say in the battle that ensued on Sunday, many of the gunmen were neutralized while two others were captured alive.

 

According to CSO Ojukwu, who led the operation, some men of the NHFSS sustained injuries, but none of them died during the gun fight.

He said a search conducted around the camp of the unknown gunmen which was constructed to look like a shrine, led to discovery of severed parts of human bodies believed to be that of their victims.

 

Other items found at the camp include a Lexus 350 and two AK-47 Rifles.

 

They also reportedly demolished and set the camp ablaze, while all recovered items were handed over to the police for further action.

CSO Ojukwu thanked the transition committee chairman, Anambra East Local Government Area, Dr. Anselem Onuorah, for his support for the NHFSS in the area which according to him, has continued to motivate them for exploits.

 

He also praised the Deputy Commander General, NHFSS in charge of Technical Services, Ambassador John Metchie, for his role, adding that it was the Sienna Car he donated to them that was used for the operation against the gunmen.

 

The DPO Otuocha Police Station also received commendation for his support to NHFSS, which led to the success of the operation.

 

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, while responding to ABS telephone inquiry said he was yet to receive such information from the Otuocha Divisional Police Officer, as at the time of filing in this report.
