A one-time Governor of Anambra State, Dame Virgy Etiaba has described Christianity as the foundation of human development.
Speaking on the one hundred and sixty-six years of the coming of Christianity to Igbo land known as CMS Anniversary, Dame Virgy noted that without Christianity, Ndi Igbo would have remained in the dark ages of idolatry and barbarism.
The former Governor enumerated some of the achievements of the Church Missionary Society to include establishment of churches, schools, hospitals as well as stopping of killing of twins and slave trade among others.
She extolled the efforts of some of the prominent early missionaries like Bishop Ajayi Crowder, Archbishop John Patterson, Reverend John-Christopher Taylor and Simon Jonas whose strong faith in God and deep evangelical prowess brought light and development to the Eastern part of Nigeria.
Dame Virgy enjoined Ndi Igbo to use this year’s CMS Anniversary to rediscover those Christian virtues of evangelism, love, faith and unity of purpose championed by the early missionaries.
The former Governor while wishing Christians in Igbo land a happy CMS Anniversary, prayed God to immortalize the efforts of the early missionaries and institute enduring peace and progress in Igbo land.
