Women from across Ukwulu town in Dunukofia Local Government Area, Anambra State have converged for their annual Women’s August Gathering.

The event, held at the Ukwulu Civic Center, drew hundreds of women from various backgrounds and professions, showcasing the strength and diversity of women of the town.

 

The gathering kicked off with prayer session and match-past exercise as a way of keying into the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Mrs Nonye Soludo’s healthy living initiative.

In her keynote address, Barrister Oge Ekweozor, addressed the issue of child labor as she highlighted the ugly reality faced by countless children in the state who are subjected to exploitative labor practices, depriving them of their basic rights to education and a proper childhood.

 

She advised mothers to be attentive to their children’s upbringing so as to protect them from social vices while emphasizing the crucial role women play in society and encouraged them to continue breaking barriers and pursuing their aspirations.

Addressing another critical concern, Mrs Nkiru Okpata, spoke about the challenges widows encounter in the society.

 

She condemned the various forms of discrimination, marginalization, and property rights violations that widows often face as she urged them to speak up as there are legal and social initiatives that would protect the rights of widows, ensuring their dignity and empowerment.

 

While thanking God for a successful August meeting, the President General Ukwulu Town, women wing, Mrs Njideka Anusi, underscored the significance of the topics discussed, noting that by addressing child labor and the plight of widows, the gathering had solved some pressing issues affecting the society.

Others who spoke during the event included the Deputy State APGA woman leader, Honorable Chinwe Umerie, the APGA Woman Leader, Dunukofia Local Government Area, Honorable Ngozi Atunali and Mrs Anthonia Onyekwunife.
