The legislature is an important and critical organ of the three organs of government in the development of democratic society.

In this report, House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim takes a look at the contributions of the Anambra State House of Assembly in the development of Anambra State after thirty-two years the state was created.

Anambra State was created in twenty seventh August, 1991 by the then Military Head of Stafe, General Ibrahim Babangida, thereafter election was conducted into Anambra State House of Assembly and Right Honourable Dom Obiekeie emerged as the first speaker of the House.

However, between 1999 to early 2003 when Anambra State was in turmoil, Anambra State House of Assembly did not contribute in terms of development of the state as factionalism of the House slowed its development.

From the time Barrister Mike Balonwu became speaker of the House in 2003 till date, the legislature has been stable as well as passed so many bills and resolutions that launched the Anambra State on the path of sustainable development

Commenting on the contributions of Anambra State House of Assembly to the development of Anambra State, the immediate past Clerk of the House, Mr. Pius Udo explained that Anambra State House of Assembly had played a key role in sustainable development of Anambra State through enactment of laws, oversight functions and quality representations from 2003 till date.

He maintained that for Anambra State to remain on the path of progress and unprecedented development, the Executive, legislative and Judicial Arms of government must respect one another and work in synergy.

On his part, the immediate past Deputy Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly and member representing Ihiala Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Dr. Pascal Agbodike said that for eight years he represented Ihiala Constituency Two at the State House of Assembly, the House enjoyed stability and harmonious working relationship with the Executive and the Judiciary, which resulted in rapid development of the House, adding that at thirty two, Anambra has achieved success in all sectors.
