Seven markets within Onitsha and environs have been sealed following their noncompliance with the State government’s directive for all markets in the State to embark on sanitation exercise and prayers on Mondays.

 

The President General, Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association, ASMATA, Chief Humphry Anuna disclosed this during his monitoring of compliance with the directive on sanitation exercise and Prayers in various markets.

About eight other markets opened and were seen carrying on with the sanitation exercise and prayers on arrival of the monitoring group, including Bridge- head Market, Old Mercedes Benz Spare Parts market among others.

 

Speaking to the traders at the Bridge Head Market, Onitsha, Chief Anuna frowned at the noncompliance by some of the markets and sealed some sections of the market where their union executives were not present, adding that he had warned the executives severally during their previous visit.

Chief Anuna extolled those who complied with the directives and called for its sustenance even as he disclosed that those executives who failed to come out for the exercise will be penalized.

 

The Market Union leader warned that henceforth, monitoring will focus on individual traders, as shop owners who fail to open their shops will have themselves to blame.

Speaking to the ABS, the General Chairman, Bridge Head market Onitsha, Chief Chinedu Ezekwuike, who expressed satisfaction with the exercise, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for introducing the sanitation exercise and Prayer sessions in the markets and called on traders in the markets to always come out every Monday.

 

Other markets monitored include, Ogboefere Market, Plastic market One and Two, Ogbaru, and the New Auto Spare Parts, Nkpor, among others.
