Oraukwu Community in Idemili North Council Area has celebrated the 2023 New Yam festival.
The festival held at the Ime-obi of the community heralded the beginning of yam harvesting season and showcasing of achievements in agriculture in the community.
The event reports that it attracted dignitaries from within and outside the state including traditional rulers.
Speaking at the event, the traditional ruler of the town Igwe Emeka Onuorah who described the festival as a catalyst for peace building in Oraukwu and Igboland, pointed out the need for Ndigbo to continue to promote Igbo culture as a way of life to save it from extinction.
lgwe Onuorah called on Nigerians to embrace agriculture in order to achieve food security and increase export sell to reduce economic hardship and thanked God for this year’s bumper harvest which he said is the best so far and extoled Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his developmental strides in the state especially in agriculture, health, education and road network, urging Ndi-Anambra to continue to give him support to enable him actualize his vision for the state.
Also speaking, the Traditional Prime Minister of the town, Chief lfeanyi Chinedu, who commended the peace and unity in Oraukwu thanked God for this Year’s bumper harvest, and for His blessings and protection to the community.
In his welcome address, the President General of the community Mr. Shedrack Onwasoanya said that they are abundantly blessed with fruitful harvest and emphasized the role of such festivals in promoting unity and peaceful co-existence in the town.
On his part, the former Governorship Candidate of People Democratic Party in the State, Chief Valentine Ozigbo said he came to identify with Igwe Onuorah and Oraukwu kingdom in celebrating the New Yam festival, noting that the town is known for promoting lgbo culture and tradition.
The Iwa-ji Ndi-Oraukwu featured, Holy Mass, breaking of kolanut, cutting and eating of new yam by Igwe Onuorah and Ndi Obi of the major nine villages in Oraukwu, masquerade and cultural displays
