Stakeholders and policy makers have been called upon to advance policies that will ensure institution have access to needed facilities for effective E-learning in Nigeria.
This call was made during the 2023 national conference on e-learning for sustainable education in Nigeria, held at Nnamdi Azikwi University Awka.
An Education Technologist with the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Professor Theresa Ofoegbu, who championed the call in her keynote speech at the 2023 national conference on “E-learning for sustainable education in contemporary Nigeria”, explained that with well organized e-learning, inclusive and equitable quality education can be achieved, and lifelong learning opportunities made available for all.
Professor Ofoegbu, who identified technical challenges, poor practical or lab work, poor communication skills, poor academic conduct and impersonation as some of the challenges to e-learning, noted that the method is cost effective, flexible, enables learners acquire internet skills, encourages interaction and collaboration among colleagues, ensures individuality of learners, as well as maximization of personnel.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Charles Esimone, represented by the Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Vivian Nwogbo, also noted that e-learning comes with potential benefits to the instructor or institution and the learner, but with more challenges to the learner; in the areas of acquisition of needed technological gadgets, as well as the availability of nation-wide internet connectivity in the country, which he said is the responsibility of the government.
On her part, the Head, Department of Educational Foundations, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Sabina Nwana, who noted that education is the greatest asset for all-round human development, stated that stakeholders are worried by the challenges the sector is facing in the present age of technology revolution, computer, internet, email, e-books, e-readers, e-board in curriculum delivery.
Guest at the event and former Anambra APGA Chairman, Sir Norbert Obi called on organisers of the event to present to the government what must be done to achieve set goals, believing they will be implemented.
The conference organised by the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, was chaired by the former Provost, Federal College of Education, Technical, Umunze, Professor Josephat Ogbuagu, who urged all to key into e-learning for sustainable development, and not to be left behind in a fast-developing society.
