Anambra State Government says that it is poised to strengthen the Social Protection Policy and Social Register of the state.

 

This was disclosee during a three-day workshop held at Agulu, and powered by the State Ministry of Economic Planning, Budget and Development Partners in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The event attracted the State Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, the Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr Julius Chukwuemeka, his Health and Agriculture counterparts, Dr Afam Obidike and Mr. Foster Ifejiofor who shared their ideas and made inputs on how the social protection would be strengthened in their different ministries.

 

The program geared towards engaging stakeholders on the need to have social protection policy will serve as a guide to address the problems of vulnerability in the state.

The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake said that currently, Anambra State has over one point two million people in its social register and many are yet to be enrolled as the current situation in the country led many people to poverty and assuring that, right people are captured after the programme .

 

Mrs. Nnake maintained that UNICEF is helping to review the social protection policy in ensuring that they cover all they need to and expand the current social register, stating that her ministry has developed a frame work that is relevant and reflective and be able to develop a policy that covers the vulnerable people in the state.

The Economic Planning Commissioner further noted that the present administration through the programme wants to give an average person in the state a sense of belonging to reposition and improve the living conditions of all.

 

For the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning, Mrs. Stephney Karry-Uzo, said that the solution mantra of Governor Soludo is not political, rather a robust administrative pattern with reliable objective in all sectors of the state economy, with visible improvements in road infrastructure, health care, education, social welfare, agriculture, steady electricity among others.

On his part, the UNICEF representative, Mr. Segum Tekun, disclosed that UNICEF contributes to inclusive growth as social protection supports crisis response and structural change, promoting production employment and entrepreneurship, preserving human capital, better health and education status.
