The federal government and International Fund for Agricultural Development-Value Chain Development Programme has urged farmers to adopt nutrition-sensitive agriculture by growing home gardens.
Its Anambra State Programme Coordinator, Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha made the call during a knowledge sharing exercise for farmers at Ogbaru and Orumba South Council Secretariates respectively.
The exercise, which centered on nutrition sensitivity Agriculture, was aimed at promoting healthy living.
Mr. Agwuncha, represented by the Anambra State Knowledge Management and Communication Officer of the programme, Mr. Henry Anagboso, described the exercise as a vital means with which the programme encourages learning among beneficiaries and enjoined them to embrace the initiative of the programme for their well-being
The nutrition officer, federal government and International Fund for Agricultural Development-Value Chain Development Programme, Mr. Ifeanyi Uba, who led the cooking demonstration, disclosed that the Orange Fresh Sweet Potato and the Pro-vitamin A Cassava, are highly rich in nutrients and lots of other nutritional value.
A farmer, Mrs. Philomena Ekemezie, who specializes in Cassava farming, shared testimony on how the nutrition initiative of the programme has helped save her family from frequenting the hospital as a result of malnutrition.
She urged her fellow farmers to take the idea of home gardening seriously as it will help to promote their family’s source of natural nutrients.
Some of the participants, including Mrs. Henrietta Onyia from Ogbaru Local Government Area and her Orumba South counterpart, Mrs. Anthonia Munachi, expressed gratitude to the federal government and International Fund for Agricultural Development-Value Chain Development Programme, for always coming up with initiatives geared towards bettering their lives, adding that the knowledge sharing was indeed a capacity building and an eye opener for them.
