Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix Odimegwu has reiterated the efforts of the state government in ensuring a cleaner and sustainable environment even as some concerned citizens have called the attention of both Federal and State governments to the menace of erosion in parts of Awka.

Engineer Odimegwu emphasized that the era of indiscriminate dumpling of refuse is over as the state government is sustaining efforts in ensuring proper disposal of waste.

 

He stressed the need for Ndi Anambra and residents of the State to be stakeholders in ensuring a cleaner, healthier and sustainable environment in order to avert health challenges through proper disposal of their waste, regular cleaning of the drainages, planting of trees and other healthy practices.

On the challenges of erosion, the Commissioner explained that Anambra has huge erosion problems, and that preventive measures are being taken to salvage the situation.

 

At Girls Secondary School Amaenyi Awka, where a part of the school and its surroundings are threatened by erosion, the principal of the school, Dr. Ndidi Okeke said that they are making frantic efforts to check the erosion and called on both the Federal and State governments to help to bring a permanent solution to the menace.

In the same vein, Mr. Chris Offordile, an Awka stakeholder, who commended Governor Soludo for his efforts in lifting the Awka community in terms of infrastructure, said that the erosion menace around High Tension wire at Amachalla and Amudo parts of Awka is a serious threat which requires urgent attention.

 

Mr. Emeka Ezekwe, a resident of Awka explained that some of the erosion sites in the city have gone beyond self-help projects and need government intervention.

 

Others who spoke on the challenges of the erosions, including Messers Sam Nwanna and Joseph Nwaiyi regretted that erosions hinder development at all levels and called for urgent interventions.
