Anambra State House of Assembly has expressed its commitment to partner Rotary International in the eradication of poliomyelitis in the world.
The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, gave the assurance when members of Rotary International District 9142 paid him a courtesy visit at the Assembly Complex in Awka
While commenting on the theme of the 2023 Rotary year, which is “Create Hope in The World”, Right Honourable Udeze informed them that the Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, is giving hope to people through ongoing massive road construction across the state, employment of more teachers for public schools, inclusion of youths in the affairs of the government, among others.
Right Honourable Udeze, who is also a member of Rotary Club of Onitsha Metropolis, disclosed that he has been supporting the fight for the eradication of poliomyelitis in the world, and commended members of Rotary International for being in the forefront in the fight against polio in Nigeria.
In his speech, the Governor of Rotary International District 9142, Rotarian Akan Emah, told the Speaker that Nigeria was certified polio-free two years ago by the World Health Organization, WHO, and has sustained the fight against polio from 1983 till date through the financial assistance of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
He said that the essence of their visit was to invite the Speaker to the 2023 polio summit of the district, which will hold in Awka on Saturday, adding that the summit will be flagged-off by the wife of the Governor of Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo.
While seeking continuous support of the Speaker to Rotary activities, Mr Emah urged the Anambra State House of Assembly to enact a law that will protect health workers whenever they go to give polio immunizations to children.
The visit climaxed with decoration of Right Honourable Udeze with Rotary International 2023 theme pin, presentation of end polio shirts to the Acting Clerk of House, Mr. Okey Nwaobi and the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Emma Mmadu.
