The Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, Awka has commenced a three-day workshop for seven hundred and ninety-eight adult and non-formal education facilitators in the six educational zones of Anambra State.
The workshop is to train the participants on andragogical skills.
The Awka educational zone workshop held at ASUBEB headquarters in Awka, attracted facilitators in the zone, resource persons and officials of the Agency including the Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Ebele Iyke-Odili.
In her welcome address, the Acting Director of Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, that the workshop which was approved by Governor Chukwuma Soludo is ongoing concurrently across the six educational zones of the state.
She stated that it is aimed at upgrading the knowledge of the education facilitators to enable them know what they are doing in their schools.
She explained that the reason the workshop is being done at zonal levels is to bring it closer to the facilitators even as she mentioned the challenges encountered in the course of organizing the training and how the state government enabled them to overcome them.
While saying that the workshop is mandatory for all the facilitators, Mrs. Ononiru charged them to be attentive to what the resource persons are dishing out to them and stepdown the knowledge gathered to their students.
One of the resource persons, Professor Uche Obidiegwu of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, explained andragogy as a set of core adult learning principles that has flexible and diverse applications and focuses on learners’ self- confidence, independence, persistence, resilience, self-worth and motivation for life-long learning.
She noted that as a result of this, it can be adapted to all learning environments such as apprenticeship, offline and online instruction, internship, conferences, seminars, lecture series among others and stressed the need for facilitators to be creative and innovative.
In her paper presentation, another resource person, Dr Kate Madu from Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, pointed out that the theme of the workshop, “Application of Andragogical skills in Teaching and learning,” is very apt especially in this 21st century where instructors and facilitators of learning are expected to update their knowledge and skills continually in order to meet up with the constant changes in the world.
