Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works has called for the construction of a flyover at Akpaka in Onitsha, and Nsugbe road to safeguard road network within the area.

House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that the Committee made the call when they oversighted road projects in Akpaka in line with their constitutional responsibilities.

On arrival at the project site, the Committee met the firm in charge of the project working according to specifications with high quality materials and heavy-duty equipment.

Commenting on the project, the Chairman of the Committee, Engineer Emma Nwafor, stressed the need for the construction of a flyover that will fly across the River Niger and connect Akpaka and Nsugbe.

The legislator explained that the essence of the bridge is to prevent the River Niger from overflowing the road and others in Onitsha environs.

On his part, the Project Manager, Mr. Shaw, disclosed that they have already submitted a proposal for the project to the Ministry of Works and urged Anambra State Government to consider it for the benefit of the people.

In his remarks, the member representing Onitsha North Two Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Pat Okafor, noted that Akpaka – Nsughe road is very strategic as it links the Anambra East Local Government area, adding that on completion, the road will address gridlock that usually occurs at 3 – 3 Onitsha during rush hours by serving as alternative route for motorists.

At Silas, Works and Creek roads in Fegge, Onitsha, the Committee called for immediate desilting of all the water channels in the area blocked with refuse; as it obstructs free flow of water, and to prevent flood from washing away the roads being constructed by the Anambra State Government in Fegge, Onitsha.

Expressing his gratitude to the Committee for oversighting ongoing road projects in Fegge, the member representing Onitsha South One Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Fred Ezenwa, urged his constituents to desist from dumping refuse inside drainages; as it causes flood, urging the Ministry of Environment to desilt Sakamori channels in Fegge to facilitate free flow of water and prevent the roads in the area from early failure.

In an interview, the representative of the Contractor handling the project, Engineer Nnanyelugo Onyemelukwe, told the Committee that the two point six kilometer road has five months duration and that they will deliver in record time.
