The Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service, Sir Chido Obidiegwu has called on relevant authorities to intensify efforts towards ensuring the protection of children’s rights in this part of the world.

 

The ABS Managing Director made the call during the reconstitution of the Anambra State Children’s Parliament held in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund Field Office Enugu, at the ABS Corporate Headquarters in Awka.

The reconstitution of Anambra State Children’s Parliament which was sponsored by UNICEF Field Office Enugu, is an event marking this year’s World Children’s Day, with the theme, “Climate Change “.

 

Sir Chido who expressed dissatisfaction with the way children’s rights are being trampled upon in this part of the world, said that authorities should as a matter of urgency take actions that will guarantee the safety of children and protection of their rights in order to save the society from impending danger, as according to him children are the hope and future of the society.

Calling on government to enact and enforce laws that will protect children’s rights, Sir Chido asked religious leaders to always preach messages that will reshape the lives of the children into better citizens, Medical Doctors to first save lives of children in critical health conditions instead of demanding for deposits before treatment, lawyers to provide free services to children with litigations in court, among others.

 

In a paper presentation, the Director of Programs of the ABS, Mrs. Nneka Ekwunife thanked the UNICEF for various efforts towards championing the well-being of children across the globe, calling for all hands to be on deck to ensure total protection of the children’s rights as according to her, it is a collective responsibility.

For the Speaker of the Anambra State Children’s Parliament, Honourable Victoria Ekwunife, relevant authorities should see to the implementation of all the already existing laws on protection of children’s rights, as she observed that there is already a number of laws in Nigeria that seeks to protect the rights of children if well implemented.

 

Contributing, one of the members of the Anambra State Children’s Parliament, who represents Anambra West Constituency at the Parliament, Honourable Silvia Chinwuba who moved a motion for the incorporation of physically challenged children into the parliament, called on the Anambra state ministry of Children and Women Affairs in collaboration with the government and relevant stakeholders to step-up efforts in ensuring that the needs of children with disabilities in the state are met and their rights protected in a special way.
