The maiden edition of Debating Tournament for Private Schools in Anambra State,2023/2024 has entered its second day.
The event organized by Agbako-Agbako Empowerment and Development Foundation took place at the College of the Masters, Commissioners’ Quarters, Awka, attracted students and teachers from sixteen selected private secondary schools across Anambra State.
In his speech during the opening ceremony, the Founder of the foundation, Dr Amobi Nwokafor explained that the establishment of the debating championship platform was born out of the desire to give private secondary schools in Anambra the platform to enjoy what their counterparts in public and public mission schools are enjoying who have been participating in debating competitions within and outside Nigeria, bringing back laurels.
He told the debaters that they need to work and study hard so they can join in bringing back laurels for Anambra State in debating competitions.
Dr Nwokafor represented by a Deputy Director Programmes, Anambra Broadcasting Service, Mr Roy Ekwunife, described himself as a lover of education who has been giving all forms of supports in various quarters in Awka including education and advised the debaters to make the best of opportunity in the debating championship.
The Facilitator of the Debate Championship, Mr Benson Ibe, explained that the organizers of the debate discovered that private secondary schools are lagging behind in the current trend in debating championship and thought it wise to create the platform to motivate and sensitize them to begin to debate according to the standard of World School Debating Championship style.
He pointed out that this was the first round of the Debating championship and the
winners will be selected at the fourth round which would take place on a future date, adding that the overall winning school will go home with two hundred thousand naira.
Speaking to the ABS, Mrs Patience Ahodu, Miss Sophia Cosmos from Prosperity Secondary School, Nkpor, and Mrs Favour Mbakwe and Master Promise Mbakwe from Petram Christium International School, Isuaniocha, disclosed how they prepared for the championship, challenges encountered and expressed hope that they will also emerge winners in the final round of the championship.
The Moderator was Mr Chijiokem Ezulike, Chief Adjudicator Chiagozie Udeoji, while the second judge was Mrs Uche Ikegwuonu and the third judge was Dr Grace Ebem.
All Hallows Seminary Onitsha and College of Masters Awka emerged winners on the first day while Petram Christium International School, Isuaniocha and Prosperity Secondary School, Nkpor, emerged winners on the second day of the first round of the debate.
The schools that won in the first edition will now participate in the second edition of the Debating championship on a later date.
