The importance of quality teachers as the foundation for effective teaching and learning outcome cannot be over emphasized. When Mr. Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, inaugurated the incumbent Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nkiru Nwadinobi and her team to steer the ship of the Board, he left no one in doubt as to his expectations to totally turn around the state’s basic education sector.

Guided by the clear visions of Mr. Governor to embark on immediate digitization of the basic education sector to make all public schools in the State become model smart schools; enhance the quality and practical oriented education to meet the needs of the present society; and subsequently make the pupils global citizens through series of training and retraining of the teachers, ASUBEB under the leadership of Dr. Nwadinobi in the past one year has been pursuing these visions with diligence and dedication.

The Board received, documented and posted 2,500 teachers for Basic Schools out of the 5,000 newly recruited teachers by the administration of Governor Soludo, to beef up the teacher-pupil ratio in public primary schools in the state and immediately conducted a capacity building workshop to integrate the newly recruited teachers into the noble profession.

To enhance the capacity and motivate the old teachers, the Board processed and released the backlog of 2020, 2021, and 2022 promotion examinations’ results and equally released the three years outstanding State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB counterpart funding. These were approved by Governor Soludo to ensure that the teachers are happy doing their job.

The board, in May 2023, organized special workshops to expose the teachers on the latest ideas and skills in their fields and in the same month organized the annual science day exhibition which was intended at encouraging our children, especially the girl child to pick interest in science and mathematics.

The Board has successfully digitized the information system to ease enquiries and retrieval of information with a massive improvement on the harmonious working relationship between the hierarchies of administration through intensive administrative and leadership seminars because unity of purpose is essential for goal achievements.

ASUBEB has also introduced the Montessori method of education in public primary schools. This so that children will gain independence and creativity to become globally competitive individuals that can readily fit into the labour market in the future. Happily, Anambra State is the first State in Nigeria to apply this Montessori method of teaching in public primary schools. The Board has also approved the revival of school sports in all the public primary schools.

The Board has also embarked on series of intervention mechanisms and sensitization campaigns to create awareness on the dangers of out-of-school children. This has yielded expected results as research has shown a reduction in the prevalence of out-of-school children, while many of them have been enrolled back into school, free of charge.

Remarkably, ASUBEB has also re-introduced the 13th month allowance and is transforming analogue teachers into digitally compliant teachers.

Indeed, a new dawn is here in Anambra State Basic Education Board. The icing on the cake is the forthcoming Anambra State Global Teachers’ Summit, focusing on ‘Education in a Digital World’. The one-day summit which will be conducted virtually and physically in partnership with ICT and media partners of the Board promises to be a gathering of teachers from the twenty-one Local Government Areas of the state. The aim is to educate, train and empower the teachers with digital tools to enhance their productivity.

Evidently, ASUBEB’s roadmap is to increase the literacy and numeracy of the Anambra child by making the state public primary pupils regain its glory. ASUBEB cannot appreciate the Solution Governor, Professor Soludo enough, whose dream for the Anambra child is to become an all round developed child that can stand out anywhere in the world.
