Wife of the governor of Anambra State and founder of the non-governmental crusade, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, Mrs. Nonye Soludo says stronger institutions and increased investment in human capital development are key factors in defeating the menace of trafficking in persons.
Mrs. Soludo who stated this in Awka at a public awareness programe on prevention of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, explained that tackling poverty, providing social and economic opportunities and strengthening existing institutions would help win the fight against human trafficking.
The event was organized by the Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants in Nigeria (A-TIPSOM) in collaboration with the Network Against Child Abuse Labour, NACTAL, and centred on the theme: “Combatting Trafficking in Persons, Engaging the Youths.”
The governor’s wife while regretting that despite efforts to check the scourge, the numbers are still growing, and called for the full implementation of existing laws while prosecuting institutions should be supervised to ensure that every case is tracked and completed.
She also talked about investing in education, creating employment opportunities, and empowering women and children, noting that there is also the need for adequate information to break the walls around the criminal enterprise.
Mrs. Soludo further noted that the State government is maintaining steady investment in developing human capital of the state, with a view to eradicating poverty and creating a thriving economic environment.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo explained that the government has achieved significant results in eradicating trafficking in persons in the state, adding that the involvement of all stakeholders is also important to completely defeat the menace.
She noted that through consistent government support, trafficking many syndicates have been apprehended , with women, children, and girls rescued , while many cases taken to court have been decided .
