Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the executive governor of Anambra state is a political visionary whose erudition and urbane cosmopolitan disposition have dictated and informed his style of political leadership. During the gubernatorial campaigns in 2021, he made public his plans to transform Anambra state from a rustic state to a modern and developed sub-national political entity. He envisioned an Anambra that would bear a striking resemblance to modern cities in Asian countries. Today, the Governor is making true his visions of making Anambra state a safe, livable, and prosperous state.
Before his ascendance into the loft of power, Anambra state was in the firm grip of criminal elements. The state was a hotbed for a faceless group who ran riot in the state, unleashing mayhem on the people and destroying public property. The trend has since changed and the high incidence of these criminal acts has abated. It was Governor Soludo’s interventions that stemmed the tide. The terrorists, armed robbers, and kidnappers terrorizing the people have been dislodged from their safe havens. So, now, in Anambra state, people are no longer being killed by unknown gunmen who were fighting for nebulous causes.
Again, Governor Soludo is acutely aware that if Anambra state is clean, it will be a safe space for human habitation. In the past, refuse dumps that oozed a stench sat next to people’s houses and major roads, causing untold hazards to the health of residents and appreciable unpleasant sights to our scenery. But Governor Soludo’s roadmap for the evacuation of refuse dumps from our streets in our major towns is yielding necessary results and ridding our streets of those mountainous and unsightly dumps that occupied portions of our roads and impeded free flow of traffic.
In addition to making our towns clean, and executing security measures to guarantee the safety of life and property, Governor Soludo prioritized the education sector. Being aware that education is the cornerstone for national development, he
has commenced revamping of Anambra state’s education sector. He knows that a functional and efficient school system is the game changer in our drive to evolve our own variant of technological culture and achieve economic prosperity.
So, when Governor Soludo discovered that there was a shortfall in the number of teachers required for our primary and post-primary schools, he swung into action to address the anomaly. He ordered the recruitment of teachers for Anambra schools. The state government successfully employed five thousand qualified teachers into the public school system in 2022 and in less than one year is in another process of recruiting another three thousand teachers. The government has already revealed that this batch is targeted at filling the gaps in schools in hinterland and hard-to-reach areas of the state.
It is no longer news that the Anambra State government is vigorously implementing its free education policy in primary and junior secondary schools and has sanctioned school administrators who went against the policy. Remarkably the government of Governor Soludo also increased the amount given to the schools as monthly running costs by over five hundred per cent.
Governor Soludo’s actions designed to revamp our parlous state of education is informed by his deep-seated belief that education is an equalizer of opportunities between the rich and the poor.
Another notable achievement recorded by the Soludo administration is the implementation of the “1Youth, 2Skills” empowerment programme in the state. Unemployed young people who registered for the programme were trained in diverse vocations and five thousand of them who successfully completed their training have been given money to set up their own businesses. The initiative which is already in its second batch is designed to equip our youths with skills, which will make them become self-reliant, thereby reducing the high rate of unemployment in Anambra state and in Nigeria.
Governor Soludo is an exemplification of a servant-leader. His educational training, occupation of exalted positions in global financial institutions, and sojourn in the ivory towers have prepared him adequately for the job he is doing in Anambra state now and indeed he is delivering on the mandate given to him by Ndị Anambra.
