College of Nursing Sciences, Saint Joseph’s Hospital Adazi Nnukwu, in Anaocha Local Government Area has organized a matriculation ceremony for its one hundred and seventy-five year-one nursing and midwifery students.

The ceremony, which commenced with a holy mass officiated by the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor, also featured commissioning of CBT centers with three hundred sets of laptop computer and cubicles, with internet facilities.

In his homily during the Eucharistic celebration, Bishop Ezeokafor reminded the new and old students of the institution that nursing is a vocation that demands enormous sacrifices, as practitioners help God to save lives.

The prelate, who assured of continued support of the church in sustaining the college, urged the government to improve welfare of medical personnel in order to retain best brains in Nigeria, regretting that lack of employment opportunities and poor working conditions discourage people from seeking further education.

In his remark, the Administrator of the College, Reverend Father Jude Igboka, who thanked parents and students for having confidence in the quality of moral and academic teachings being offered in the institution that started since 1938, urged the matriculants to redouble effort in their studies in order to achieve set objectives, having crossed the Preliminary Training Session, PTS, hurdle.

Contributing, the Head of Nursing Department of the College, Mrs Mary-Michael Ezenwuba, noted that with availability of resources and infrastructure, the institution is on the path of becoming world-class College of Nursing, calling for more support in addressing other needs of the institution.

In her keynote address during capping ceremony, the Director of Nursing Services, Anambra State Ministry of Health, Mrs Perpetua Anene, represented by the Head of Nursing Department, Tansian University Umunya, Dr. Henrietta Okedo, said nursing encompasses autonomous, collaborative and interdependent roles in patient care.

On behalf of the matriculants, the overall best in nursing department, Miss Chidalu Ileboh, and the overall best in midwifery department, Miss Chinemerem Ukwandu, thanked God for the opportunity to be among successful students, and promised continuous efforts to make the institution and their families proud.

Capping of the new students, and recitation of nurse’s pledge by the newly capped students formed the highpoints of the event during which Bishop Ezeokafor announced a scholarship for two newly capped students.
