The yuletide, a season that in many traditions is said to begin on December 13 or 21 till the middle of January covering the periods of Christmas and New Year festivities, can indeed be a period of high spending in many parts of the world, especially among Christians. During this period, people often spend more money on gifts, food, transportation and entertainment.

In South East Nigeria, like in many other regions, the cost of goods and services often skyrocket this season due to increased demands. This could include higher prices for items such as food, clothing, and decorative materials, and others depending on expectations and family size. Additionally, travel expenses also rise as people visit families and friends, or go on vacations.

These increments can make the holiday season very expensive for individuals and families. This high cost may make it difficult for extended families who would have wished to celebrate together to celebrate apart. Also, the cost of food including the main ingredient for traditional Christmas meals like rice, chicken, turkey, among others, tend to rise, causing strain on household incomes.

Coupled with these, the new cash scarcity which is rearing its head up has become a source of worry to many. Already, some people have begun hoarding cash because of the fear as to whether they can truly trust the Central Bank of Nigeria to keep to its promise to ensure that both the old and new Naira notes remain legal tender in line with Supreme Court ruling. This hoarding of notes and their consequential impacts are adding salt to an existing injury.

The transport sector is not left out of the woes of the season. Road crash rate rises this season as well as different road users resort to anti-traffic rules to meet up with the engagements of the season. Many of them see the yuletide as a harvest season for huge income where they will cover up for the year’s missed opportunities. The cost of traveling has already skyrocketed with transport fares doubling over one hundred per cent at all levels. Moreso, the ordeal of most Nigerians are worsened by long fuel queues in filling stations especially at the peak of yuletide. The density of travelers also causes heavy gridlocks on major expressways.

To manage the expenses during the yuletide, it is important for individuals and families to create a budget and plan their spending carefully. This can help in prioritizing essential expenses, safety and travelings. Additionally, considering alternative ways to celebrate, such as organizing potluck meals or exchanging homemade gifts can also help to reduce costs.

We should always have in mind that Christmas is a special time of year that brings joy, warmth, and togetherness to many people. The holiday season is often marked by various traditions and activities that foster a sense of reflection, gratitude, act of kindness, renewal and hope, and memories celebrating love and joy. It is, therefore, advised that these positives are prioritized ahead of any extravagance. Happiness, joy and brotherly reunion can be achieved without while staying on a budget.

It is also worth considering that the spirit of the yuletide is worth more than material possessions. Finding meaningful ways to celebrate without overspending can one help maintain the joy of the season without adding to the afflictions that follow from the financial burden it leaves behind. The spirit of Christmas encourages reflection on the values of love, giving, and gratitude, as well as the opportunity to look back at the passing year and looking forward to the future with hope and renewed purpose.
