It was a beehive of activities at Saint John’s Field Igbariam in Anambra East Local Government Area as the women from the seven villages that make up the town came out en-masse for their maiden women convention.
The convention which had its theme as “Total Emancipation of All Igbariam Women’ was attended by Ndi Ichie, Ojiana, Irunabo and other stakeholders in Igbariam.
Some of the dignitaries included the member representing Anambra East Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Barrister Obi Nweke and his wife, Nkiru; the President General, Igbariam Progressive Union, Dr Chris Offorkansi and his wife, and the mother of the day, Chief Mrs Margret Egenti.
Addressing the women, the member representing Anambra East Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Barrister Nweke who is also an indigene of the community said the convention brings the women together to champion peace, togetherness, oneness and progress of the community.
He asked them to use the programme to discuss ways to bring back sanity and high moral values to their families as the rate at which young people indulge in smoking cannabis sativa and committing other immoralities have become alarming.
The President-General of the community, Dr Offorkansi commended the Woman Leader of the community for such initiative and explained that he believes that the convention will help to expose the women to contemporary issues facing families.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Chairman on the occasion, Mr Onyekwunive Nwogugu who is also the Vice President, Igbariam Progressive Union expressed the hope that the convention will help them achieve greatness and promote their identity at all times.
In a welcome address, the Woman Leader of the community, Mrs Maureen Akwuba said the convention will help to harmonize the efforts of the women and the Igbariam Progressive Union to bring overall development to the community.
The women received their crown queen, Mrs Nneka Okoye during the event.
Cutting of the convention cake and other cultural displays also featured at the event.
