Yuletide funfare continued at Adazi-Nnukwu Cultural festival, as sons and daughters of Adazi-Nnukwu from different parts of the State and beyond joined the fun filled event held at the popular Afor Market Square.

 

Reading out an abridged story of Adazi Nnukwu written by Mr. Alloy Mouka, Miss Emmanuella Adaobi revealed that Adazi Nnukwu people are descendants of Okotu from Umuona, Aguata Local Government Area.

She explained that Okotu married and one of his wives bore him children, which included Adazi-Enu, Adazi-Ani and Adazi Nnukwu and just like their originator, Adazi Nnukwu people are said to be strong, resilient and hardworking.

 

Miss Adaobi also noted that Adazi-Nnukwu are known farmers that share boundary with Agulu lake, and are mostly Catholic adherents from 1907, when the missionaries set foot on the town, during the period of the first Warrant Chief, Ogbuefi Ojiakor.

In his remark, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji who graced the event,noted that it was a great and exciting event, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Adazi-Nnukwu and Ndigbo, bringing about peace, joy and progress for the wonderful people of the community which is worthy of emulation.

The Transition Committee Chairman for Anaocha Local Government Area, Chief Gerald Ozoh, said that the festival projects the Council area positively, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the people and appreciated the sponsor and the Town Union leadership for their efforts in staging the event

The President General of Adazi-Nnukwu Town Union, Chief Cyril Anetoh in his remarks, explained that the event was an annual one which is being held on the last day of the year, and that it is getting better each year, and also an avenue for keeping Ndi Adazi-Nnukwu and Igbo traditions alive.

 

Earlier during the Kolanut breaking ceremony, the traditional Prime Minister of Adazi Nnukwu, Chief Kanu Ugwumba prayed for peace, progress and unity for Adazi-Nnukwu people and a better year ahead.

Different masquerades were on display to the delight of those present, which include Ajofia Nnewi, Esesu Agbala Awka and Agaba, as different age grades from Adazi Nnukwu joined in spicing up the occasion which also featured, ‘Ima mbem’, dance by women groups, fashion parade by women and ‘Itu Ilu’ by children, even as the great masquerade of Adazi Nnukwu, ‘Isi aga na mpio’ and the likes brought the ceremony to an end.
