Forty-five years after leaving the four walls of Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS Onitsha, the Class of 1978 of the school has held its annual reunion and dinner night to familiarise, connect and engage with members of the set.

 

The event took place at Royal Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha.

 

The class had their first meeting in the year 2020, forty-two years after they left school.

However, this is their first major reunion since they came together as Class of 1978.

 

The 2023 reunion started with their Annual General Meeting where the report on their previous meeting was read and other relevant issues discussed.

The Bishop on the Niger and proprietor of the school, Right Reverend Owen Nwokolo, the Assistant Inspector General of Police Ben Okolo, and some Old Boys of DMGS from various sets attended the event.

 

Addressing the class, the Chairman on the occasion, Dr. Ernest Obiejesi said the reunion is a moment he cherishes so much as it avails them the opportunity to reconnect and reflect on their journey so far.

Dr. Obiejesi who is the President of Obijackson Group of Companies appreciated all who have been actively involved in the activities of the class, pointing out that he is dedicated to projecting class of 1978 worldwide.

 

He also advised members to take good care of their health, as he launched the life and health insurance scheme for the class with a presentation of a cheque.

In a lecture delivered by an Old Boy of DMGS, titled “What DMGS did not teach us”, Sir Chike Onyejekwe said the school did not teach them disrespect and laziness.

 

Sir Chike whose paper was presented by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former old boy of the school, Barrister Nnamdi Ibegbu, pointed out that the culture of discipline and hard work inculcated in them has been the ladder on which they progressed.

Speaking to the ABS in an interview, the Chairman, class of 1978, Mr. Noel Adimike said he is excited to reconnect with his classmates, pointing out that he saw some of them for the first time in forty-five years.

 

The class of 1978 honoured two of their teachers, the Modern Mathematics Teacher, Chief Patrick Nwagboluogu, and Chief Anene Egbonye, the Additional Maths teacher, who were present at the event.
