Wisdom, character and beauty found a home in the Late Reverend Mother Alice Nonyelum Ekwueme who will be committed to mother earth on Thursday 11th January, 2024. She was born to the family of late Pastor Hezekiah Mbaegbu of Nnaba Village, Awka-Etiti in 1932. She had her education in Awka-Etiti and Onitsha respectively, and was always with her father who was often transferred to different cities for missions and evangelism.

She got married to late Bishop Ignatius Ginikandu Ekwueme, who was then an Evangelist with the Christ Holy Church Nigeria. The marriage was blessed with six sons and two daughters, among whom is Rotarian Chika Ekwueme, Past Assistant Governor of Rotary International and Past President of Awka Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.

“Nne Emeka” as she was affectionately called by her late husband was a virtuous woman, full of kindness, and caring not only for her children but for anyone who crossed her path. Mama was a precious woman of God, visionary, graceful, accommodating, and supportive. She devoted greater part of her life to prayers and evangelism and was the power house of the successes recorded by her late husband, most especially the exponential growth of the church of God.

Until her death, Mama was the President of Women Fellowship of the Christ the King Apostolate Church, Nigeria – a position, she diligently used to advance the gospel, empower the less privileged, promote love and compassion and pray for the peace and unity of the church of God worldwide.

She was an epitome of faith and charity. She approached every challenging situation and trials with undying love, and unbending trust in the ability of God to intervene and bring a positive change. She lived her life in total conviction that what God cannot do, does not exist. Armed with prayers and fasting, Mama interceded for her husband, children and the church from the schemes and intimidation of the devil.

Reverend Mother Ekwueme was a priceless gift to her husband and children. She played a significant role in their lives and stood always in the prayer gap for her family. She did not spare the rod to instill character, integrity, contentment and discipline to her children. Mama can be succinctly described in the words of King Solomon in Proverbs chapter thirty-one, thus: “She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness. She keeps an eye on everyone in her household, and keeps them all busy and productive”. Mama’s children are busy and productive, never found wanting in the service of God and humanity, holding on the legacies of their parents and contributing to the betterment of society with their talent, treasure and time.

Reverend Mother Ekwueme was a woman of God whose life exemplified faith, hope and charity unfeigned, who worked side by side with her late husband, Bishop Ekwueme in a life of total sacrifice through years of unwavering and selfless dedication.

Mama’s life will forever remain a treasure spent in sacrifice, never in worldly pleasure. A holy woman of God and great in faith. Though we have everything life can bring, we miss you. So, we are waiting for that blessed day when we meet again.

Adieu, Nne Emeka, a woman of infectious faith!
