The Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner Mrs. Ify Obinabo has vowed to rescue one Maryann Nwakego, a sixteen-year-old new mother from her captors.

Mrs. Obinabo made this known in her office in Awka after the parents of the girl brought the complaint to her.

According to the mother of the girl, Mrs. Uwaoma Ezigbo from Abatete, Idemili North Local government area, she had earlier warned her daughter to stop associating with one Chidi Ofoedu from same community and had taken the step further by begging the said Chidi’s parents to hold their son from mingling with her child.

Mrs. Ezigbo alleged that despite her plea, the duo continued their affair which eventually led to pregnancy and she reached out to Chidi’s mother, Mrs. Ogechukwu Ofoedu but all to no avail, and narrated that after sometime, she stopped seeing her daughter and all efforts to bring her back proved abortive as the Ofoedu’s had already taken her daughter to live with them.

Mrs. Ezigbo further revealed that she went to several places in order to retrieve her child, including Special Anti-Robbery Squad Awkuzu, where she lodged a complaint against the family and noted that it was at the station that the said family came with her daughter who was no longer pregnant.

On inquiries to know what happened to the baby, Mrs. Ezigbo stated that her sixteen-year-old child who came with Ofoedu’s family, told her that her grandchild is dead and that they have already buried the dead baby.

When asked why she didn’t take her daughter home after the incident, Mrs Ezigbo explained that she was told to come back the next day by the officers in charge of the case, but upon her return was told that all parties involved in the case have been discharged and noted that ever since then, she has been begging the Ofoedu family to release her child so that she will at least complete her secondary education.

After listening to her, Mrs. Obinabo assured that she will not only rescue her daughter, but will also investigate and know what transpired with the presumed dead baby.
