A young widow, Mrs. Chinenye Okonkwo; from Umunankwa village, Ifite Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State has called for the intervention of the state government and other relevant agencies in the on-going land dispute between her and her late husband’s brothers.

Briefing newsmen at Oraifite, Mrs. Okonkwo said her husband died in 2017 at the age of forty-five, leaving her with their five children, a boy and four girls, with the oldest being fourteen years.

She said that after her husband’s death, his brothers, Messrs Cyril and Boniface Okonkwo, asked her to remarry, stating that she is no longer married to the family.

Her refusal to remarry resulted in the intimidation and humiliation she is facing.

According to her, Mr. Boniface Okonkwo; also known as “Overheat”, without her consent and against the warnings of their kinsmen, erected a building on the part of her late husband’s land with blocks moulded by her late husband before his death.

She said she is currently stranded as she has been sent out from the family compound.

While stating that she was legitimately married into the family and should not be subjected to such treatment, the widow called on the state government to intervene on the matter to enable her children have a place in their late father’s house.

Confirming her report, the Chairman of Umuodiliogu family, Umuchime kindred in Umunakwa village, Ifite Oraifite, Mr. Francis Okafor, said they had called for a meeting to settle the case amicably; but the meeting was violently disrupted by Mr. Boniface Okonkwo and his thugs; leaving several people injured.

Mr. Okafor said the kindred had long ordered the family to stay away from any property belonging to the deceased, stressing that Oraifite community and Anambra State in general do not condone any form of maltreatment of widows.
