Christians world over commemorate Ash Wednesday today.
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lenten season when Christians journey with Jesus Christ for forty days in the wilderness; seeking repentance and the face of God.
It is also the start of Easter season when Christians are marked a sign of the cross; symbolizing sorrow for sin.
Speaking on the significance of the day, the Archdeacon, Awka Archdeaconry and Vicar, All Saints Anglican Church, Amenyi, Awka, Venerable David Ezeobi,
said Ash Wednesday is a season in which all Christians should reflect on their relationship with God, pray and fast, and reflect on their lives, as well as make amends where necessary.
He noted that the season calls for more dedication and attention to God with clean hands and hearts so that God will have mercy and lift man up, regretting that the world over, people are living their lives carelessly.
Venerable Ezeobi asks Christians to pray for their sins to attract pardon so as to live new life, adding that while fasting and praying, during the season, Christians should extend charity and alms to the poor and the down-trodden, even as he challenged all to distance themselves from anything that will distract their spiritual upliftment.
For the Diocesan Chancellor, Aguleri Diocese, Reverend Father Innocent Acho-Egbunike, the season, which is the most important in church calendar, calls for abstinence from sins and sober reflection on how Christians live their lives.
He reminded Christians that they are dust, therefore should start early to run the race of their lives according to the teachings of Jesus Christ, as well as sacrifice what they have for the less privileged people among them.
special mass and church services will be held in parishes across the nation.
