The Chairman, Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC, Awka, Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, has stressed the necessity of providing students with the enabling environment and opportunity to develop to their full potential so that they will be well equipped to contribute to the growth and development of the country.
Speaking at Saint Peter’s Secondary School, Achina, in Aguata Local Government Area while declaring open the 2023/2024 Career Day Convention for Anambra Secondary Schools, Professor Ikediugwu pointed out that the future of Nigeria depends so much on the students, reason the career convention is targeted at them.
The PPSSC Chairman, who was the Keynote speaker at the event organized by the Anambra State Government; in conjunction with the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC and Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, described Career Day Convention as one of the annual compulsory programmes of PPSSC and ASUBEB aimed at creating career awareness among students and sensitizing them on making rational career choices.
She charged principals to endeavour to support the programmes of the Counseling units of their schools, as well as supervise their activities to ensure that they are in compliance with their roles and functions, and reminded parents that it is no longer fashionable to dictate or impose their career decisions on their children; in total disregard to their interests, abilities and potential.
At the ceremony that had in attendance students, teachers and education stakeholders from across the six educational zones of the state, Professor Ikediugwu appreciated Governor Chukwuma Soludo for retooling the school system with teaching staff and improving their welfare.
The Transition Committee Chairman of Aguata Local Government Area, Dr Chibueze Akabuike, who briefly recounted the story of his life on choosing career, commended education stakeholders for giving quality education to Anambra students, and advised the students to pay attention to the paper presentations from resource persons, even as he charged them to discover themselves in order to become better persons tomorrow.
In their separate remarks, the Zonal Director, PPSSC, Mrs Charity Igwe, Chairman on the occasion, Honourable Patrick Ezenwata, and the Principal of Saint Peter’s Secondary School Achina, Reverend Father Walter Okafor, said the career convention held in their domain was a blessing, and lauded Governor Soludo, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, Chairmen of PPSSC and ASUBEB for their giant strides in the education sector of the state, which they said have been attracting commendations and awards from within and outside Nigeria.
The business session of the day featured various paper presentations aimed at enlightening the students on the right career choices to make.
In her paper presentation titled, “Career in Catering’’, the Principal of Community Secondary School, Oko, Mrs Ifeoma Enekwechi, noted that in this time of unemployment, a course in catering will give the student an automatic employment, even as he or she becomes his or her own boss.
She reminded the students that success is often the result of hard work, dedication and passion for what one does, assuring them that with the right qualities they can achieve anything they set their minds on.
Principal Community High School Nawfija, Mrs Josephine Nwannadi, handled the paper on “Career in Medical Laboratory”, while the Principal of Community Secondary School, Ihite, Mrs Anurika Abazu, spoke on “Career in Accountancy”.
The 2023/2024 Career Day Convention, which had its theme as, “Career Choice: Panacea for self Esteem in Achieving Life Goals”, featured question and answer session, as well as welcome song, drama and cultural dance.
