Organised Labour says it has given the federal government a fourteen-day ultimatum to review upwards the national minimum wage as a measure to cushion the effect of inflation in the country.

 

The Anambra State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor disclosed this during a media briefing to announce the suspension of the second day protest declared by the Organised Labour across the country.

 

The briefing and now reports that briefing the media, Comrade Nwafor said that the national executive council of the organised labour decided to give the federal government another opportunity to make amends and settle the issues raised by the workers within the fourteen days given them to decide.

 

Comrade Nwafor said that they called for the briefing to reiterate the need for them to drive home their demands which is for the federal government to stop inflation, as according to him, workers can no longer cope with the hunger and starvation staring them in their faces on daily basis.

 

On the palliative given to workers and pensioners from September to December 2023, Comrade Nwafor pleaded with Governor Chukwuma Soludo to review upwards the palliative to cushion the effect of the hardship on the state workers for optimal performance.

 

The President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe said as much as they appreciate the efforts of the government in providing social infrastructure, the citizens need to be alive to enjoy all the amenities, stressing the urgent need to improve the economic condition of the people.

 

The leader of the coalition of Civil Society Organisations, in Anambra state, Prince Chris Azoh said civil society organizations in Anambra are totally in support of the organised labour as he said that they are fighting a just cause, which is for the interest of the masses, urging them not to relent.

 

The briefing was well attended by all the affiliate unions of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
