Following the building collapse at a section of Ochanja market Onitsha, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, has visited the site to ascertain the remote cause of the ugly incident.

The group was led by the Anambra State Chairman of COREN, Engineer Victor Meju.

Speaking to the ABS after inspecting the site, Engineer Meju frowned at the poor mixture of concrete and substandard material used in the construction.

He said the engineering infrastructure for the building is nothing to write home about, and cautioned engineers to always think about safety first.

While listing poor foundation and use of substandard material as possible cause of the collapse, Engineer Meju said soil testing is very important before erecting any building; as it helps to determine the type of foundation and structure to erect on the site.

He sympathized with the affected families, assuring that the regulatory body will intensify effort in supervising buildings under construction in the state and country at large.
