Women in Anglican churches worldwide yesterday commemorated 2024 Mothering Sunday, a special occasion that honors mothers and motherhood.
This tradition, holds deep historical and cultural significance within the Anglican community as congregations come together to pay tribute to mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures in their lives.
Anambra Broadcasting Service crew toured round Anglican Churches in Awka Diocese, and observed that mothers took the centre stage during the services held, including reading the lessons, church wardening, cross bearing, conducting church activities among others.
The women were dressed in various outfit according to the cadars they belonged, such as mothers’ union, girls’ guild, womens’ guild.
The theme for this year’s mothering Sunday is ‘Walking with God’.
Delivering the 2024 message of Mothering Sunday on behalf of the President, Mothers Union, Women’s Guild, Young Wives Fellowship and Girls Guild, Province of the Niger and Diocese of Awka, Mrs Martha Ibezim, the Archdeacon, Awka Archdeaconry and Vicar, All Saints Parish, Venerable David Ezeobi, noted that the day is an opportunity for congregants to reflect on the nurturing and unconditional love provided by mothers and asked women to walk with God.
At Saint Marks Anglican Church, Enugwu-Agidi, the vicar, Venerable, Dr. Nnamdi Emendu, while delivering the sermon, emphasized the importance of love, gratitude, and family unity, urging mothers to be submissive to their husbands, and nurture their children in godliness.
Speaking, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church Nodu-Okpuno, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim represented by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Pilgrimage, Barrister Obiora Nweke, stated that mothers play crucial role in the development of the society, noting that works of mothers in the society are always underestimated, urging them not to relent in working for the development of the State and nation.
On her Part, the Vice President Women’s Ministry, Saint Paul’s Church, Umuokpu Awka, Mrs Loveline Ifeanyi-Umeh, encouraged mothers to uphold the true virtue of motherhood.
The Provincial Diocesan Protocol Director, Diocese of Awka, Dame Chika Osinomumu, a Journalist, Mrs. Chioma Nwamah of Saint Mary’s Anglican Church Nodu-Okpuno and a Parishioner at All Saints Parish Awka, Lady Chinwe Oranu recognized the role of women in building the nation, emphasizing that mothers Sunday serves as a reminder of the importance of cherishing and supporting mother figures.
Religious correspondent Amaka Chibuzor Okoye reports that special performances, like drama, dance, praises, prayers, award presentation and thanksgiving added colour to the church services.
