Wife of the governor of Anambra State Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has stressed the urgent need for the revival of dying family traditions that have great impact on child upbringing.
The governor’s wife, who was speaking in Awka at women gathering explained parents should change certain family ways of doing things that do not have meaningful effect on the home, especially on the children.
Mrs. Soludo pointed out that common family values like eating together, praying together in the morning, checking up on the children periodically, telling them stories and answering their questions about life’s realities and the environment around them, teaching them to value hard work and honesty, all seem to be fading away thereby creating deep social and moral vacuum in the present society.
She further highlighted other family cultures like spending holidays and special occasions together, visiting the less privileged, sharing work schedules and telling stories together, and emphasized the need for their revival as a way to restore social re-orientation.
She said that the fading of these values and traditions have forced so many children to depend on their peers and other external influences for guidance, which often turn out to be lvery misleading.
While stating that parenthood is a sacred responsibility, Mrs. Soludo urged parents and guardians to understand that raising a child is an intentional process that should be pursued without distractions.
She spoke on the need for parents to make their children their best friends, as well as opening up their hearts to listen, counsel, and direct the children at all times, without excuses.
The governor’s wife also noted that traditional family values should not be seen as outdated and impracticable, explaining that sacrificing discipline and education for the love of a child is usually counterproductive.
