National Water Resources Capacity Building Network Centre, in collaboration with the Borehole Drillers Association of Nigeria, Anambra State Chapter has marked the 2024 World Water Day with the inauguration of a borehole project at Igwebudu Primary School Urum.
The event which took place at the school in Awka North Local Government Area attracted community stakeholders, students and management of the school.
inaugurating the project, the Director, National Water Resources Capacity Building Network South-East Zone Professor Emma Ezenwaji said that the celebration aims to highlight the benefits of water management as a conduit for peace, showcasing effective mechanisms and tools to enhance cooperation and prevent water-related disputes.
According to him, water is life and needs proper and regular management as such the importance of the vision of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo to reinstate urban water supply to reduce the burden the state citizens face in accessing good water.
Professor Ezenwaji expressed their commitment to ensuring constant water supply in the school to improve the hygiene of the students to avoid illness, calling for improved management of the borehole to ensure sustainability.
Educating the students on the use of water and importance of personal hygiene, the Chairman of Borehole Drillers Association of Nigeria Anambra State Chapter, Mr. Edet Solomon encouraged students to imbibe the culture of constant washing of hands especially after using the rest room as it is the major way of being free from all manner of sicknesses and assured the community and management of the school that the association will apply the necessary requirements in achieving a world class borehole facility for the school that will stand the taste of time.
A stakeholder in the community, Chief Damian Ileemena thanked the group for choosing the community to be one of the benefiting towns of their projects and assured them that Urum community will give them all necessary support to succeed in their positive initiative to better the lives of their children and community in general.
Responding, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Ogochukwu Oranu and the Parish Priest of Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, Urum, Reverend Father Charles Ezeoke appreciated the group for the project as it has remained one of the most challenging needs facing the school and assured that when completed, the school management will manage the project properly.
The event featured presentation by pupils on the importance of water and acknowledging the gap the project will close for the school and people living in the area.
