National Senior Secondary Education Commission, NSSEC, has chosen Anambra State as its South East zonal headquarters as a result of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s revolution in the state’s education sector.
The Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr. Iyela Ajayi revealed this during an advocacy and sensitization visit to Anambra State held at the headquarters of Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC Awka.
Education correspondent Queen Anigbogu reports that the federal government in an attempt to reposition senior secondary education in April,2023, established the National Senior Secondary School Education Commission as the regulatory and intervention agency for the senior secondary education sub-sector of the Nigerian education system.
The 9th National Assembly passed the bill establishing NSSEC into Law and the President signed the NSSEC Act into Law in 2023.
The Commission’s Executive Secretary, Dr Ajayi represented by the Head Senior Secondary Education Department, Mr. Mohammed Salihu explained that for Anambra State to enjoy the benefits in the commission, it must domesticate the NSSEC law in the state.
Dr. Ajayi outlined some of the mandates of the Commission to include to prescribe and enforce the National Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, develop policy guidelines for the operation of senior secondary education programmes in Nigeria, advise Federal Government on the funding and development of senior secondary education in Nigeria, support national capacity building for teachers and managers of senior secondary education in Nigeria among others.
In his comment, the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze assured the Commission that in the next six weeks the NSSEC law will be domesticated in Anambra State to enable the state gain access to the facilities being provided by NSSEC.
The Speaker represented by the Chairman, House Committees on Education, Honourable Emmanuel Okpalaeke while expressing the readiness of the state Assembly to assist the Commission wherever necessary, also assured teachers in the state of improved welfare.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh in her remarks, described the event as epoch making in the ever-revolving education sector since Professor Chukwuma Soludo became the Governor of the state and appreciated NSSEC for instituting the south east zonal office in Anambra State.
For the Chairman PPSSC, Awka, Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu it is God’s wish that Anambra State is chosen to be South east zonal headquarters noting that the need to nurture and create an enabling environment for education in the South East and Anambra State in particular has come because no country or state can rise above the level of its education.
The event attracted principals from the six educational zones of the state, students, top PPSSC staff.
