Christians have marked the solemn occasion of Palm Sunday with celebrations in Awka and environs.
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy week and serves as a reminder of Christ’s journey towards crucifixion and resurrection.
In the streets and roads, Christians were seen in large numbers clutching palm fronds as they made their way to their respective places of worship.
At the Churches visited, the air echoed with shouts of “Hosanna,” as believers gathered to commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
At Divine Mercy Chaplaincy, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, the Holy mass began with procession after palm fronds were blessed, just as parishioners read out the passion of Christ.
In his homily, the Chaplain of the Chaplaincy, Reverend Father Micheal-kings Okpala, noted that the celebration is meant to reenact Christ’s history which took place at the passion road in Jerusalem, urging Christians to emulate the example set by Christ such as humility, compassion and selflessness.
At Christ Redemption Anglican Church, Ezi-Awka, the Church was decorated with palm fronds, while the congregations sang hymns with deep reflection showcasing the essence of the day.
In a sermon centered on “Christ simplicity and humility”, the Vicar of the Church Venerable Rex Kanu, emphasized the virtues of simplicity and humility exemplified by Christ, and reminded the faithful of God’s divine purpose in sending Christ to redeem mankind, reconcile them with God through his sacrifice and teachings.
He urged Christians to trust Christ who has solution to the problems facing mankind.
Speaking in a sermon, the Archdeacon, Ofemilli Archdeaconry and Vicar of the Saint Thomas Anglican Church, Ebenebe, Venerable Goodness Amaechì, who said that Christ remains the king forever, stressed the importance of imitating Christ’s humility in everyday life, adding that Palm Sunday is not just a historical event, but a call to action for Christians to emulate Christ’s humility and simplicity in their interactions with others.
