Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has held its centenary inaugural Lecture on the topic,” My Environment, Your Environment: Challenges of Our Activities and Coping Strategies” delivered by Professor Chinedu Okoye.

 

The lecture began with academic procession and attracted members of the university community, family members, friends and associates of the centenary inaugural Lecturer, Professor Okoye.

Queen Anigbogu reports that Professor Okoye is of Urban Planning and Environmental Management in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Environmental Sciences of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, with numerous academic publications to his name.

Declaring the event open, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Charles Esimone said that the Nnamdi Azikiwe University is advancing in terms of discharging of academic activities, noting that each inaugural Lecture comes with something unique and described Professor Okoye as a symbolic person for delivering the centenary inaugural Lecture of the institution.

Delivering the lecture, Professor Okoye described the environment as God’s gift to man, given to him to preserve but that man’s activities have been having adverse effects on the environment.

 

He cited the various researches he carried out which revealed that there is a great destruction in the physical environment of man and man’s activities contribute immensely to the massive pollution of water, air, and soil, and called for proactive steps to be taken to protect the physical environment.

 

In his remarks, the Anambra State Director of National Population Commission, Dr Joachin Ulasi pointed out that the lecture is very apt and geared towards having a very perfect structural plan for the environment where things can be done orderly and advised governments to look into it.

The wife of the inaugural Lecturer, Mrs. Bisola Okoye urged her husband to remain faithful to God who has brought him this far in life and also appreciated Professor Esimone and numerous people who graced the occasion.

 

The event featured citation on the inaugural Lecturer by Bishop Chijioke Onuoha, his decoration by the Vice Chancellor, donation of books to the department and photographs.
