Following the directive of the Anambra State government which bans the excavation of sand in communities across the State to avert gully erosion which is currently claiming many acres of state land, the Nanka traditional institution and Nanka Town union have restated committed to implement it.

 

They however regretted that some individuals who are bent on violating the order are using some disgruntled elements in Amakor, one of the villages in Nanka to achieve their aim by going around to accuse the traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo and President General of the community, Reverend Canon John Ezeike of engaging in sand mining in the area.

When ABS crew and other journalists visited the area to ascertain the true position of things, it was observed that the village which has a common boundary with Oko has no sand beach, in addition that the Road linking the area they are accusing the traditional ruler and President General of sand mining is not motorable.

 

Speaking to Newsmen at the scene, the President-General of Nanka community, Reverend Canon John Ezeike described the allegations as the handiwork of those who are working towards bringing the Nanka traditional institution and town Union leadership to ridicule and advised the public to disregard such claims.

He expressed satisfaction with the order of the Anambra State government which bans sand mining in the community, which he said the leadership of Nanka traditional institution and town union is implementing to the later, as according to him the community is prone to erosion.

 

In an interview, the Chairman Erosion Control Committee of Nanka community who is also the President of Anambra and Imo states Drivers Association, Chief Emmanuel Ezeokafor, while saying that the allegation against the President-General and Traditional Ruler of Nanka is false, explained that sand mining activity had long ago been stopped in all parts of Nanka community, and that his erosion control team which was established last year by the President-General after a town hall meeting held at Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area with Governor Chukwuma Soludo on measures to take against erosion menace in the area, are moving round the community to make sure that there is no existence of any form of mining activity.

On their parts, Nanka Woman Leader, Mrs Chinyere Okafor, and Amakor village Nanka Woman Leader Mrs Gloria Nsuofor condemned the action of the rumor mongers, wondering why some people will fabricate such a story just to dent the image of the Traditional Ruler of the town and President-General, and to cause unnecessary problem in the community just for selfish gain, advising peddlers of the allegation to have a rethink.

The former Chairman Amakor-Njikoka Development Union Nanka and a member of Igwe’s Cabinet, Chief Emmanuel Obiekunie attributed the allegation to the handiwork of some members of Amakor village who are working against the traditional stool and leadership of the Nanka community for reasons best known to them, appealing to the state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs to do the needful to ensure that Amakor village has leadership, as according to him the major cause of the problem in the village is lack of leadership.
