In a significant move towards strengthening the local governance system, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission Bill .
The move paves way for the much-anticipated local government elections and setting a robust legal framework for their conduct.
The bill, which received support from the legislators, aims to empower the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) with the authority and resources necessary to oversee the local government elections.
During plenary which was presided over by the Speaker, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, the House resorted to the Committee of the Whole where the lawmakers took turns to go through the bill clause-by-clause, making necessary amendments and corrections.
The bill will come into force on fifth June, 2024, immediately it is assented to by the governor
The bill was read for the third time by the Speaker, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze and it received support from the lawmakers.
The Speaker, commended members for taken their time to do the needful and for contributing towards building a better Anambra state.
According to him, the bill when assented to, by the governor will set the ground for the executive arm to take steps towards the conduct of local government election in Anambra State.
