Law Officers Association of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter, has held a procession to mourn the death of their colleague, Barrister Peter Awa; of Nnewi zonal office of the state Ministry of Justice, who was murdered recently by gunmen in his hometown, Okija.
The event held at Jerome Udorji State Secretariat Awka, attracted members of the association who clad in black attire, moved round the secretariat singing dirge.
Speaking to journalists after the procession, the Chairman of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter, Barrister Emeka Nwangwu, said that the event was to pour out their heartfelt feelings over the gruesome murder of their colleague and to express disenchantment over other acts of insecurity in the state.
The lawyers, through their Chairman, demanded that the Police should carry out a comprehensive investigation to unravel whether the murder was in connection with Barrister Awa’s work as a state Prosecuting Counsel or his people at Okija.
He called on government and security agencies to increase efforts in ensuring security of lives and property in the state, and for the government to guarantee security and welfare of state lawyers in discharging their duties.
Contributing, the Assistant Director in charge of Nnewi zonal office of the Ministry of Justice, Barrister Charity Madukife, noted that if the murder of Barrister Awa has to do with his work in the ministry, it goes to show the level of risk involved in working as state Prosecutors.
She described the deceased as a reliable colleague who left behind wife and young children, calling for assistance to the bereaved family, and stronger measures to ensure security of lives and property in the state.
