The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Anambra State Professor Sylvia Ifemeje says it is imperative for Nigerian lawmakers to have a re-think and domesticate the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women.
Professor Ifemeje stated this in Awka during a community dialogue organized by the Worldwide Organization for Women Africa Incoporated, WOW, tagged “The WOW Conversation…003”.
Professor Ifemeje maintained it is time for lawmakers to toe the path of civilized nations and pass the gender rights equality bill into law which will do away with existing religious and cultural prejudices and accord women equal rights.
While highlighting that the Violence Against Persons Prohibition, Act which was domesticated in Anambra in 2018 has provided some solutions to the challenges facing women, the Attorney General recommended that the Judiciary should, in the meantime, rely on existing constitutional provisions and repugnancy tests to give justice to women whose rights have been violated.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Kate Omenugha who spoke on the topic, ‘Education as a path towards an equitable future for women and the girl child”, encouraged women to build their confidence, be conscious and educate their girl child.
On his part, the Managing Director, Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company, Professor Charles Ofoegbu noted that inclusion of women in politics and the economy is crucial for global sustainable development and growth even as he stated that addressing the challenges and implementing initiatives to empower women will unlock their potentials and lead to a more equitable and prosperous society.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Worldwide Organization for Women, Mrs Carol Ugochukwu said that the girl child represents the future and progress of any society and called for their training and empowerment to help them unleash their potential as agents of change fostering economic growth, social stability and sustainable development.
The South-East Co-ordinator of Worldwide Organization for Women, Mrs Ethel Eruchalu disclosed that women are passing through some obnoxious laws and treatments in their different locales and explained that they organized the meeting to let create an awareness on the contributions of women to a functional family and community.
The organization known for building an equitable future through capacity building for women hosted the dialogue between women and men in the society to highlight the concerns and issues that affect women’s lives and livelihoods in their communities.
During the programme the organization empowered some women with grinding machines and other incentives.
