Exactly on this date, June twelve last year, the eighth Anambra State House of Assembly was inaugurated following a letter of proclamation to that effect by Governor Chukwuma Soludo which marked a further consolidation of democracy and the practice of government by representation because at the center of every democratic setting is the Legislature.

 

At the first sitting of the House, the thirty lawmakers conducted an election for their leaders and the Right Honorable Somtochukwu Udeze, was unanimously elected as the Speaker in an election that was adjudged free, fair and peaceful. Right Honorable Udeze is eminently qualified for the post of Speaker in view of his wealth of legislative experience spanning over nine years, sound academic standing as well as comprehensive knowledge in Public Administration and Human Resource Management.

 

 

 

In his inaugural speech, the Speaker, Right Honourable Udeze observed that the eighth Anambra State House of Assembly has heterogeneous composition in which four political parties are reasonably represented, would translate to diversity of views, political leaning and ideology. He noted that irrespective of political affiliations, they remained united by the fact that they are all Ndi Anambra with a common destiny and campaign thrust of improving the collective interest of the people through development-oriented Bills and Motions, and serving as effective watchdog of the common wealth.

 

According to the Speaker” the present lawmaker’s motivation is anchored on prompt implementation of the Resolutions of the House of Assembly by Governor Soludo which he noted is one of the testaments to the cordial working relationship existing between the Legislative and Executive Arms of the Government in the drive towards transforming Anambra State to a prosperous and liveable homeland.

On Resolutions, the present Anambra State House of Assembly has passed over sixty people-oriented and development-driven Resolutions that touch all the sectors of the State economy. Apart from the responsibility of law making, legislators of the 8th Assembly have done well in Constituency Relations and Oversight Duties. Just few weeks before the two years anniversary of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, the Speaker, Right Honorable Udeze embarked on what he termed” Mr. Speaker’s Tour Of Roads In The Three Senatorial Zones of The State. He was accompanied by the lawmakers in the respective zones and was impressed by the number and quality of roads completed and ongoing across the Senatorial zones. The lawmakers expressed satisfaction that the Governor is judiciously utilizing state’s budget passed by the House for the good governance of the State, without accessing the loan facility approved for him by the Legislature.

 

Individual lawmakers have greatly impacted positively on their various constituents including Constituency Projects, Empowerment and Scholarship Schemes. Their oversight duties have continued to attract commendations from different quarters which have contributed towards the repositioning of government ministries, departments and agencies. The Assembly has equally performed creditably in Conflicts Resolution which has enthroned an enduring peace and harmony in various communities and among corporate bodies.

 

As the eighth Anambra State House of Assembly celebrates one year anniversary, the House is thankful to God who has led them thus far in their legislative engineering. They are equally commending Governor Soludo for transforming the House of Assembly Complex into a modern edifice with massive reconstruction of the entire complex, offices as well as the ongoing landscaping of the premises, to ensure that the lawmakers operate in a more conducive environment.
