Governor Chukwuma Soludo has visited the scene where a five-storey building under construction at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday .
Governor Soludo, represented by his Deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim was seen overseeing rescue efforts by a team of members of the Red Cross Society, medical personnel, and volunteers.
Three ambulances and two evacuator machines were on ground to assist the rescue efforts.
At the time of this report, ABS confirmed that one of the three persons trapped in the debris has been rescued.
Speaking to the ABS in an interview, the member representing Onitsha South Two in Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Jude Umennajiego, described the incident as sad and unfortunate, but thanked God that there were no casualties.
Honourable Umennajiego promised that investigations and tests will be conducted on the integrity of the materials used in the building to ascertain the cause of the collapse and to determine the consequences.
On his part, the member representing Onitsha North One constituency in the state House of Assembly, Honourable Justice Azuka, commended Governor Soludo for being on ground to oversee rescue operations.
He, however, frowned at the quality of work done by the contractor and regretted the incessant level of building collapse in the state.
Rescue operations continued at the scene of the incident as efforts to rescue the two remaining trapped victims alive intensified with the Governor and the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Patrick Agha Mba overseeing the exercise.
