Anambra State Government has commenced removal of shanties and dislodging of illegal occupants on Niger street in Onitsha.
The Managing Director, Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA brigade, Comrade Celestine Anere stated this during the demolition exercise in Onitsha after the expiration of vacation notice served to them.
The Joint OCHA Brigade Special Task Force on Environmental Offences conducted the exercise as they said that the shanties pose a security threat to the environment while the daily activities of the illegal occupants cannot be ascertained and some of them are illegal sand miners operating in the locality.
According to Comrade Anere, the State government’s issuance of relocation notices and enforcement actions aim to reclaim land and public facilities, which have been converted to personal use, to ensure public safety, enforce urban planning, and address the proliferation of illegal settlements and structures in the State.
He pointed out that hundreds of undocumented residents were seen on the premises, which lacked sanitary provisions.
Comrade Anere added that they posed security and environmental threats to the state, hence, the eviction notice.
