Governor Chukwuma Soludo has inaugurated the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Anambra State chapter Secretariat in Awka.
The event held at the Nurses Secretariat Awka attracted nurses and midwives, student nurses, medical experts, traditional rulers, labour leaders, among others.
Inaugurating the edifice, Governor Soludo represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike said that nurses in the state have played a significant role in the enhancement of healthcare delivery and appreciated their chairman, Comrade Edith Onwuka and her team for achieving the laudable initiative.
Governor Soludo disclosed that he has the interest of Anambra nurses at heart, hence the employment of over five hundred nurses, with three hundred employed to serve in primary healthcare centres across the state to bring healthcare services to the grassroots.
In his welcome address, the Anambra State Chairman of the association, Comrade Onwuka appreciated Governor Soludo for his sterling performance in office and disclosed that the association is a professional organisation and trade union, that has a mandate to unionize and enforce strict professionalism on all nurses registered with the council who are practicing at federal, state, local government and the private sector.
Comrade Onwuka revealed that the secretariat was built through prudent management of the check off dues of the union members, which was deducted from the salaries of their members working at various establishments within the state, and that they demonstrated high level of diligence and transparency in executing the project.
She listed the stagnation of single qualified nurses and midwives in CONHESS seven, non-implementation of the national approved, gazetted and harmonized scheme of service for nurses and University graduate nurses, non-implementation of twenty-five percent increase in CONHESS by national income, salary and wages commission among others as part of the problems facing their members in the state.
On his part, the National President of the association, Comrade Michael Nnachi said that the event marked a significant milestone in the history of their organisation and a testament to the dedication and hard work of all those who have contributed to the realization of the project, commending Comrade Onwuka and her team for doing a great job.
For the Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, represented by Dr. Emmanuel Umenweke who is the Awka branch zone Chairman of the association, the secretariat is a wonderful edifice and described nurses in the state as great and hardworking, saying that the NMA will continue to partner with the nurses for efficient medical services delivery.
The Anambra State President of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe, the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, represented by the traditional prime minister of Awka, Engineer Benjamin Okoye, former Anambra Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Nkechi Obiekezie who represented former Governor Willie Obiano among others attended the event.
Award presentation to some deserving individuals, including Governor Soludo as well as cultural dance climaxed the event.
