Widows in the Anglican Diocese of Aguata over the weekend converged on the Cathedral church of Saint John Ekwulobia for a special event organized by the Diocese in collaboration with a nongovernmental organization.

The special event featured a series of seminars, workshops and orientation and was part of the activities lined up in Aguata Diocese to mark the 2024 International Widows’ Day, celebrated across the world yesterday.

Declaring the event open, the Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Right Reverend Samuel Ezeofor called on various community Leaders and traditional Rulers to seek ways of abolishing all forms of harmful traditional practices that negate the progress of Widows in their various areas.

Bishop Ezeofor, who expressed regret over the challenges widows face as a result of the death of their husbands, called for the enforcement of various laws passed by both the National and State Houses of Assemblies for the protection of widows in order to create a decent society.

He reassured Widows in Aguata Diocese of sustained support, saying that Aguata Diocese has already put in place Diocesan Widows commission with the main focus of giving the Widows in the Diocese a sense of belonging.

In her remarks, the President of Aguata Diocesan Women’s Ministry, Mrs. Chinyere Ezeofor, advised widows not to allow their circumstances to lure them into negative lifestyles that do not glorify God and encouraged those who participated in the one-day dialogue to take Jesus as their husband and friend, trust in him to help them overcome life’s challenges.

Lady Gloria Ezezika, Chief Executive Officer and Principal Consultant of the Non-Governmental Organisation spoke on the theme of the International Widows’ Day celebration, noting that the theme, ‘Widows for Peace through Democracy,’ was carefully chosen and called for peaceful coexistence among people, stressing that it is essential for the enhanced development of the society.

Lady Ezezika who is a lawyer and Ladies President of Aguata Diocesan Council of Knights, urged widows to assist in bringing the needed transformation in the society by living lives that will continue to win souls for Christ and called on government at different levels to find a way of giving Women more appointments as they are better managers of resources.
