The panel of enquiry into the recent building collapse in Anambra state has continued its sitting, with professional bodies involved in building structures appearing before it and making suggestions on how to put a stop to the problem of building collapse.

 

In his submission, Architect Ositadinma Okafor, who is the immediate-past Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architecture, Anambra State chapter, said that if the recommendations of the panel are implemented after the sitting, the problems of building collapse will end in the state.

 

 

Architect Ositadinma enumerated the root causes of building collapse to include, wrong choice of professionals especially contractors, approval agencies lacking professionals, not following proper guidelines and lack of monitoring of buildings under construction to make sure that things are done properly.

 

Doctor Joachim Ulasi, a town planner, remarked that Architects, Engineers, Quantity Surveyors amongst others must work in synergy with each other and proposed the Ministry of Physical Planning to be an Umbrella body for all those concerned with building structures to ensure effective supervision and monitoring of buildings under construction.

 

The Chairman, association of professional bodies in Anambra State, Sir Raphael Nwike harped on the implementation of the panel’s findings by government, noting that using professional and standard materials is a sure way to stop the ugly menace.

 

Other bodies and personalities who appeared before the panel includes, National Institute of Builders, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, among others.

 

The Chairman of the Panel, Engineer Victor Meju, appreciated the bodies for appearing before the panel and giving their professional inputs as it would help in ensuring that the right thing is done in building structures.
