College of the Masters, Awka, emerged the overall Winner of the final stage of the maiden edition of Anambra State Private Schools Debate Championship as they went home with a cash prize of one hundred thousand naira, a golden cup and medal.

 

The Nwanno Nwimoh Memorial Secondary School, Umudioka, Awka, which took second position, went home with seventy-five thousand naira as well as a silver medal.

The Debate Championship was undertaken as a philanthropic gesture by a non-governmental organization, Agbako-Agbako Empowerment and Development Foundation which is an initiative of Dr Amobi Nwokafor.

 

The event held at College of the Masters, Commissioner’s Quarters, Awka, had in attendance, students from selected private secondary schools in the state and their teachers.

The Director-General of the foundation, Dr. Nwokafor represented by the Deputy Director of Programmes, Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awka, Mr Roy Ekwunife said that the debate championship was part of his ways of giving back to the society, adding that before now, the foundation has been undertaking medical mission to solve medical needs of members of the society.

 

He expressed delight over the outcome of the debate, saying that it is a way of preparing the students for the future as well as empowering them to become good leaders, even as he asked those that did not make it to the first position to accept it in the spirit of sportsmanship.

In his opening remarks, the Director of the programme, Mr Benson Ibe explained that the foundation embarked on the project to empower the students of private schools to catch up with the public schools and reap the benefits that accrue from such empowerment.

 

Mr Ibe noted that the tournament went through three rounds to produce the finalists and urged proprietors of private schools in the state to build on the initiative to enhance the knowledge and capacity of their students.

The Lead Speaker of College of the Masters, Master Adebisi Oluwatolu on behalf of his team, returned all glory to God for granting them favour all through the stages of the debate and thanked the organizers and his teachers for giving them such opportunity to showcase their talents, while the Lead Speaker from the first runner up, Master Chiemelie Okoro, expressed joy for coming thus far and promised to put in more efforts for future tournament.
